FAWM Update

Here's a quick update on my progress for FAWM before the Mrs. and I head to dinner, because I'm sure all two of you out there are on pins and needles wondering if I'm going to pull this off.

I have 9 songs that I consider to be done (that is, I have music and lyrics for), the titles of which (in no particular order) are:

El Camino
Broken Bottle
I Don't Want To
I Go To School (But I Drink In The Parking Lot)
Epic Fail
D-U-N Done!
Box of Wine
(It's Time To Get Down To) Brass Knuckles
Six Pack

I'm pretty proud of the diverse themes within the mulleted world I've so far been able to tackle, like ugly cars, alcohol, stupidity, fighting, breaking up, breaking bottles, and finding a one night stand. Some might get another verse or a bridge later, but I'm calling 'em good enough for now.

In addition to the nine completed songs, I have five more that only lack lyrics. Luckily, the people running FAWM are lazy and the cut off time is at the international date line (rather than local midnight), so I actually have until five a.m. to pull this off. It's going to be rough (lyrics aren't exactly my strong suit, just ask anyone that saw my old band Half-Penny perform), but much like the little engine of yore, I think I can.

Keep on rockin' in the free world,
Regis

Debate!

I just finished watching the Democratic debate with the missus. It wasn't what I would necessarily consider exciting - there weren't really any fireworks or huge Punch-Out-style haymakers (awesome as that would be) - but it was riveting, particularly at the beginning. I know there are others out there that can express and relate what happened tonight and why it was important far better than I can, I'll share a few quick thoughts.

I think Barack Obama had a solid win tonight. He stayed calm and collected, he was civil and gracious, he was presidential. Hillary Clinton, on the other hand, was a little bit scary to me. Granted, she had some points, but she was outclassed in a couple of different ways. Her attempts at humor (specifically her reference to SNL) struck me as awkward and immature, rightly eliciting some boos from the audience. In a relatively friendly debate, she seemed to get a little too worked up - and seemed even more so when contrasted by Obama's steady demeanor. Watching her icy stare (which caused my testicles retreat into my torso) and waiting for her to physically pounce on Obama, I made an offhand remark to Meg about President Hillary with her finger on the button - not as scary as President "Bomb Bomb Iran" McCain, but scary all the same. And don't get me started on her laugh or seemingly canned emotional outreaches.

I felt Obama was more than equal to Clinton as far as details and specifics go. As far as nuts and bolts go, he can be almost boring (but in a good way). It's clear to me (as it has been for a while) that he's about more than just words and abstract concepts. And Clinton's calling out Obama for attack literature struck me as the pot calling the kettle black.

Barack Obama has been my favorite candidate since the start of this campaign for a number of reasons. He inspires, but he's pragmatic. He's optimistic, but reasonable. He does his homework, his record is pretty solid, he's got a track record of working with people of different political leanings, and from what I've seen he stays cool under pressure. And when he's on his game (which seems like most of the time), my jaded, cynical, blackened little heart sings.

I don't know what more I can say here that hasn't already been said (and been said better), so I'll just wrap it up here and try to get in a little bit of rocking out before I call it a night.

Cheers,
Regis

FAWM

Alternate title: This Month's Glorious Creative Disaster

As I wasn't involved in a play or other creative enterprise, and was looking for an excuse to play more guitar (as well as buy a 16-track recorder), I decided to give February Album Writing Month a shot. In short, the goal is to write 14 songs in 28 days (this year, you're jokingly supposed to write an additional half of a song, as 2008 is a leap year).

I figured it would be even more fun to have an end product in mind: I was to write an album for an all-girl rock band called the Mullettes. It would sound like AC/DC, X, The Donnas, The Cars, and Jim Carrol got thrown into a blender.

With just over five full days to go, I've got two songs "done," music largely figured out for seven more, and a couple of additional riffs floating around in my brain. This last week (which includes my 4th wedding anniversary, no less) is going to be rough, to say the least.

Man, I'd better get back to work.

Rock on,
Regis

It's a bird! It's a plane!

It's a blog!

Not that I really expect anyone to read this, but I guess it's about time I got one. So stay tuned for oh-so-exciting news about whatever pie I've got my fingers in down the road.

Cheers,
Regis
