Hump Day Happy Hour - Devo

Lucky me, I got to come back from Gillette today (I had to go for work-related stuff, also today). Lucky you, it's perhaps the best cover ever recorded.

Sex Ed

I came across a webcomic called Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal (it's pretty awesome thus far) and felt compelled to post this argument for Bush-style abstinence-only sex education.

In other news, I rocked the twenty-minute run that concluded C25K week five like it was Falco and I was Amadeus. Excelsior!

C is for Cookie (And That's Good Enough For Me)

I came across a video of Feist on Sesame Street, and was blown away. Not so much by the video itself (although it did bring a smile to my face), but by the related content video of the Sesame Street Season 39 highlight reel.

Let me repeat that: Season 39. As in, one less than forty. Wow. Not that I was around for the first season or anything, but that kind of longevity is pretty damn impressive.

It seems like just yesterday I was rocking out to "Put Down The Ducky" as a wee lad, or aiding and abetting Dillon's truancy from a morning class by watching Sesame Street in the dorms (a proposition made all the easier by the parodies, references, and camoes that doubtless fly over the heads of the show's target audience).

This post brought to you by the number 5,

If You Watch One Superhero Musical This Summer...

Drop whatever you're doing and check out Dr. Horrible's Sing-A-Long Blog, the latest bit of Joss Whedon-spawned awesomeness. Now. Normally I have no use for musicals, but this is seriously fantastic.

Why are you still reading this? Acts I and II are currently up for free, Act III goes up on Saturday, and they all go down Sunday. They'll all be available for download and on DVD in the future, but go get it now!

Goodness, look at my arm!

Hump Day Happy Hour - The Cramps

Sorry this is so late, boys and girls, but I haven't hit quitting time quite yet - and it's pretty lame. Of course, I'm paid by the hour, so I can't complain that much.

Ah, screw it: pounding proctors blows.

Since it's after ten and I'm still at (well, back at, but whatever) my desk, here's an office favorite: "Bikini Girls With Machine Guns" by The Cramps.

Payback

As previously mentioned, I'm in the middle of week four for C25K. I should be done with it and ready to start week five, but Thursday kicked my ass. Having kind of learned my lesson on pacing, I didn't overdo it on the first three intervals so as to not curse the final five minute run and all associated with it to the deepest bowels of Hell, but alas! I couldn't keep jogging, giving up after about a minute. I don't know if it was a hydration issue, the result of eating a less than I normally do before heading out, a shoddy night's sleep, or a point somewhere in a diabolical Venn diagram of the three. Since I didn't finish it, the day didn't count and I had to redo it.

Fortunately, I kicked it's ass right back today.

Linus mentioned experiencing that burst of extra speed you often see runners produce at the end of a race, and I had it for the first time today during the last minute of the last run. But of course, being me and all, I kicked it to an unsustainable speed and had to dial it back a little. All the same, it was pretty damn awesome. Week four lost it's power of intimidation; week five, on the other hand...

Back in the ring to take another swing,
Regis

Hump Day Happy Hour - Dada

Sorry this is a bit late, gang. This week's selection comes from my favorite album of 1992, the vastly under-rated Puzzle by Dada. I can't say a lot about the album other than it kicks serious ass and my boss lent it to me (thanks, Scott!). Certain lyrics in this track, "Dizz Knee Land," are as relevant now as they were sixteen years ago - see if you can figure it out!

1.21 Gigawatts!

Inspired by a posting on The Onion's A.V. Club, I have compiled a list of my favorite album releases for each year I've been alive. In compiling this (with the help of Wikipedia listings of albums released in given years), I realized a few things, including (but not limited to):
  • Most of my favorite music is older than I am,
  • I don't really listen to all that many full albums (I had to have listened to the whole thing for it to be considered), and
  • There were some really dry years (musically speaking).
At any rate, here's the list.
1983: X, More Fun in the New World
1984: Yngwie Malmsteen, Rising Force
1985: "Weird Al" Yankovic, Dare To Be Stupid
1986: Genesis, Invisible Touch
1987: Guns N' Roses, Appetite for Destruction
1988: "Weird Al" Yankovic, Even Worse
1989: Fine Young Cannibals, The Raw and the Cooked
1990: Social Distortion, Social Distortion
1991: Nirvana, Nevermind
1992: Dada, Puzzle
1993: Junior Brown, Guit With It
1994: Weezer, Weezer (The Blue Album)
1995: Tears For Fears, Raoul and the Kings of Spain
1996: Hootie and the Blowfish, Fairweather Johnson
1997: The Aquabats, The Fury of the Aquabats!
1998: Shakira, ¿Dónde Están los Ladrones?
1999: John Williams, Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace soundtrack
2000: Flogging Molly, Swagger
2001: Cake, Comfort Eagle
2002: Interpol, Turn On the Bright Lights
2003: The Darkness, Permission To Land
2004: The Hives, Tyrannosaurus Hives
2005: Electric Six: Señor Smoke
2006: TV on the Radio, Return to Cookie Mountain
2007: ComputeHer, Data Bass
2008: We Are Scientists, Brain Thrust Mastery
I have to say, some of these picks are a little disappointing (1996, I'm looking at you), but it is what it is. Some years were pretty obvious, at least to me ('89 and '92); other years - mainly more recent years - had some tough picks (sorry, Good News For People Who Love Bad News). At least I only had one winner by default - way to go, Genesis! Overall, I have to say this a reasonably representative cross-section of my musical collection, or at least that which was released over the last 25 years.

Now accepting callers who would like to sing along,
Regis

Week Four

Today was the start of Week Four in my C25K adventure, a week composed of running for three minutes, then five minutes, then repeating both intervals.

All I can say is, it's a good thing that I'm so good at listening to the suggestion that I pace myself during that first five-minute run, so as not to wish a swift and merciful death halfway through my workout. Yep, if I'm good at anything, it's following obvious cues like music with a slower tempo and the explicit pointing out of such.

Thank goodness I've got a nearly spiteful stubborn streak to make up for it.

Don't stop 'til you get enough,
Regis

Hump Day Happy Hour - The Aquabats

It's that magical time of week again, boys and girls (and possibly Mara). I've been feeling pretty flat today and needed something to get me going, so here's a clip from The Aquabats, a band I've been into since junior high. Some might say that "Super Rad!" (from The Fury Of The Aquabats) could pass for my theme song, and they just might be onto something. And FYI, this track features the drumming of a pre-Blink-182 Travis Barker. Behold!

All systems go,
